US 1 Corridor Study – Wake Forest, NC

As part of the Town of Wake Forest’s Engineering On-Call program, Exult Engineering conducted a corridor study along Capital Boulevard/US 1, from Burlington Mills Road to South Main Street. The study aimed to assess current and future traffic operations and recommend roadway, safety, and operational improvements for the corridor.

Exult Engineering analyzed various alternatives to improve traffic flow, including standard turn lane enhancements, widening to add through lanes, and introducing reduced conflict intersections (RCIs) and reverse RCIs. Historic traffic safety data, provided by NCDOT’s Traffic Engineering Accident Analysis System (TEAAS), was also evaluated to suggest necessary safety countermeasures.

Exult developed conceptual designs for the recommended improvements, utilizing aerial imagery, field observations, and Geographic Information System (GIS) data. Additionally, Exult prepared an Engineer’s Conceptual Opinion of Probable Construction Costs (OPCC) to compare the benefits and costs of each alternative, ensuring the best solution for the future of the US 1 corridor.
